Register Now!

Course Developer: Pervasive Software

Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Length: 1 Day

Course Objectives: Introduction to Pervasive.SQL Development is a demo course that covers the basics of access methods and programming techniques. Presentations and demonstrations give developers the knowledge they need to rapidly come up to speed programming Pervasive.SQL-based applications.

Intended primarily for those with limited Pervasive.SQL experience, the course is also valuable for anyone who's experienced with just one access method--Btrieve's transactional method, most likely--and who wants to understand the other options available with Pervasive.SQL. You might, for example, wish to know about Pervasive.SQL's powerful SQL/ODBC API for integrating relational capabilities into your application; the ActiveX interface is another highly useful feature with which to acquaint yourself.

An outline of the course includes:

Section 1 - Introduction and Overview
The MicroKernel Database Engine
MKDE Access Modules
Features of the Pervasive.SQL and the MKDE
New Features of Pervasive.SQL and the MKDE
Database File Format
Transactions and Shadow Paging
Indexing
Smart Components
Client/Server and Workstation Processing

Section 2 - Setup, Tools and Development Issues
Installation Overview
The Pervasive Control Center and Tools
Compiler Interfaces and Issues

Section 3 - Using Transactional (Btrieve) Access
Database Basics
The Btrieve API
The Btrieve Function Call
The Btrieve Data Buffer
Basic Btrieve Operations
Opening and Closing Files
Single-Record Positioning and Record Navigation
Single-Record Updating

Section 4 - Relational Access and Other Interfaces
Database Basics
Data Access Module Review
SQL Relational Database Engine (SRDE)
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)
Defining ODBC Data Sources
Data Dictionaries
Pervasive ActiveX Interface
Demonstration Application

Course Prerequisites: Knowledge of software development, with Windows development background a plus. Experience in database systems is also advantageous.
